Nearly 24 New Dispensaries Planned to Open in Arkansas by the End of October

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

While many patients around the state are rejoicing to finally have access to therapeutic cannabis after a long wait, there are others who are still without access to medicinal cannabis.

We recently published a post about Little Rock, Arkansas and other areas around the state still waiting for a local medical marijuana dispensary. For some patients, the tens to hundreds of miles that separate them from the nearest dispensary is too much of a hurdle to overcome.

Some patients rely upon public transportation, or they may have other commitments or physical limitations that prevent them from traveling for hours to access medical cannabis.

For those who are waiting, we have good news. As reported by the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, according to a list put together by the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division, most of the remaining licensed cannabis dispensaries are set to open by the end of October.

Back in February of this year, a total of 32 retailers were given licenses to open their dispensaries. These 32 retailers were spread out across 8 zones, ensuring that citizens across the state would have access to medical marijuana.

However, many of these zones are still without a single open dispensary, leaving both regulators and citizens frustrated.

As of today, only 8 of these 32 dispensaries is open to the public, leaving vast stretches of Arkansas waiting for the remaining 24 dispensaries to open their doors.

If dispensary owners do not open their doors to the public by the end of January, 2020, they may face consequences from the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division, the agency in charge of the licensing for both medical marijuana cultivators and retailers in the state.

So, why is it taking so long for dispensaries to open? For the most part, it is not due to a lack of trying. Instead, dispensary owners are facing weather troubles, zoning issues, and court disputes.

We will continue to track dispensary progress so that you can know when a new dispensary opens its doors near you or even in your hometown.
