How Medical Marijuana Can Help Relieve Nausea

Medical Marijuana for Nausea

Most people have experienced nausea in their life - that uncomfortable feeling in the stomach that is often accompanied by the feeling of a need to vomit. Other symptoms that may appear when you are experiencing nausea are abdominal pain, lack of appetite and regurgitation. Nausea can be caused by a variety of factors such as medications and treatments or a symptom caused by a medical condition.

Fortunately, medical marijuana can help provide relief from nausea and vomiting. A study in the British Journal of Pharmacology shows that THC, one of the most prominent cannabinoids found in marijuana, works as an antiemetic. When cannabis is consumed, cannabinoids interact with a biological system in our bodies known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Within the ECS, we have receptors. CB1 receptors regulate food intake, emesis and nausea. When THC interacts with our CB1 receptors, it can help reduce the feeling of nausea and vomiting.

There are two types of nausea: acute and chronic. Acute nausea stems from a condition that comes on suddenly, such as from the stomach flu, a migraine, motion sickness and more. Chronic nausea, on the other hand, occurs when the feelings of nausea are consistently present. This is typically associated with medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gallstones, hepatitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Nausea is a common symptom of a number of conditions, and medical cannabis has the potential to provide significant relief. Cannabis can help if you experience nausea caused by any of the following medical conditions:

  • Anxiety conditions

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Cancer

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Head trauma

  • Hepatitis C

  • HIV/AIDS

  • Pancreatitis

If you are an Arkansas resident suffering from a medical condition you think may benefit cannabis, you're likely eligible for medical marijuana treatment.
