How To Talk To Your Doctor About Medical Marijuana Treatment

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

As both the healthcare field and the technology industry rapidly transform, patients have more control over their preferred treatments. Now more than ever, patients wish to turn to natural remedies to relieve symptoms and treat chronic health conditions.

Medical marijuana has proven to treat and alleviate the symptoms associated with a variety of medical conditions and ailments, but patients are still sometimes hesitant to bring up this form of treatment with a doctor. Before jumping into the discussion with a physician, we’ve outlined some quick tips for making the conversation productive and ultimately beneficial for your health.

1. Do your homework

Research is key. In order to be informed from all angles and confidently have a conversation with your doctor, start with some simple research. Understand your specific condition and how medical marijuana has proven to help with the symptoms. Get an understanding of the benefits and potential risks. Read more about the laws in Ohio that allow for medical marijuana cards and the process for getting approved for the card. Have conversations with others around you who might use medical marijuana effectively. Identify quality resources like books and documentaries that could be helpful before your appointment. Speak to one of our Patient Services staff members. Our team is available to answer any questions you may have about qualifying conditions and the requirements for obtaining a recommendation for medical marijuana.

Going into the conversation with a general understanding of the benefits, risks, and laws for medical marijuana will help the conversation run smoothly.

2. Prepare some questions

As helpful as research can be, you’ll still have questions for a trained professional, and that’s OK. While you research, jot down questions that strike you as important. These questions will help you round out your discussion with a physician as you determine the best course of treatment.

Below is an example of questions you can keep in your back pocket, but make sure you include questions specific to your lifestyle and condition. For example, are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant? Do you have children or pets? What current medications are you taking? Other general questions include:

  • Are there any adverse health risks I should be aware of?

  • Are there activities I should avoid while using medical marijuana?

  • What is the cost associated with medical marijuana?

  • What type of cannabis or CBD would be most effective for me?

3. Be transparent

After you set an appointment, remember to be transparent. Don’t be shy about speaking up and being an advocate for your health. Know that all doctors are not specialized or trained in this industry, and may not be familiar with this form of treatment. Understanding the subject from all angles will help you make an informed and safe decision for your health.
