Cannabis Vaping Guide for Beginners

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

Medical Marijuana patients have several methods to choose from when deciding how to consume their medication. Vaping has quickly become one of the most preferred ways to consume cannabis. One of the main reasons vaping is a favorite among patients is due to its convenience. Cannabis vape pens are a quick and easy way to consume cannabis without having to worry about a long onset time or even the hassle of grinding up your flower for a dry herb vaporizer.

Vape pens quickly heat up the cannabis oil which is located inside the cartridge of the pen for patients to begin medicating and relieving their symptoms in as little as 90 seconds. For some pens, all you need to do is inhale, while others you simply press the power button to activate.

Anatomy of a Vape Pen

Let’s break down the components of the pen:

  1. Mouthpiece - The mouthpiece is the component you inhale through. On some vape pens, this piece can be removed or replaced.

  2. Tank - The tank is the part of the pen which contains cannabis oil. The consistency of the oil inside the cartridge is comparable to liquid dish soap. Some vape pens are disposable, while others are reusable, meaning they come with a battery. Reusable pens are convenient because you can refill the old vape cartridge with a concentrate from a dispensary or purchase a single cartridge to replace the old one.

  3. Atomize - The atomize is the vape pen’s heating mechanism. To get the most benefits from vaping, cannabis oils must reach a temperature of 315-465°F. In order for the cannbinoids to active, the cannabis oil needs to be heated to this temperature. Depending on the vape pen, there are several different types of atomizers or chambers. The most popular and effective one is a ceramic atomizer, as these are the most durable. Some pens can simply heat up by inhaling through the mouthpiece, while other pens have a power button to activate the heating process.

  4. Battery - This is the power source of the pen! You can connect a USB charger to the end of it for easy and convenient charging. The battery life is highly dependent on usage, and the type of pen. Most pens will not need to be charged frequently as the battery life will last up to several days.

Benefits of Vaping Cannabis Oil

Vaping is extremely beneficial for patients who suffer from chronic pain, due to its quick onset time. Patients can expect to start feeling the effects of their medication in as little as 90 seconds after inhalation. Vaping cannabis is an effective method for patients who are seeking immediate pain relief. Vape pens can be purchased in indica, sativa, and hybrid options. There are also strain-specific pens available at dispensaries, which are great for patients who have shown success with specific strains of flower. Vaping cannabis is just one of many methods patients chose to relieve their symptoms with. During your next trip to the dispensary, ask your budtender about vaping cannabis and if there’s a strain for you!
